Traffic jams have formed in Kyiv following overnight shelling
On the morning of Thursday, 22 October, the traffic situation in the capital worsened due to the consequences of Russian missile strikes. The restrictions have been particularly felt by residents who commute daily between the left and right banks of the Dnieper.
Following an inspection of the infrastructure of the South Bridge, the city authorities announced the need to temporarily alter public transport services and restrict vehicle traffic heading towards the left bank. As a result, part of the traffic flow has shifted to other routes, increasing the burden on the capital’s road network.
Footage of heavy traffic and traffic jams is circulating on social media. Drivers are advised to bear in mind the restrictions and allow extra time for their journeys.
The Green Metro Line is operating with restrictions: which stations are open
According to the Kyiv City State Administration, the Russian attack damaged part of the metro infrastructure on the South Bridge.
As a result, trains on the Syretsko-Pecherska line are temporarily operating on two separate sections:
- Right Bank: from «Syrets» station to «Vydubychi» station.
- Left Bank: from «Osokorky» station to «Chervonyi Khutir» station.
There is currently no train service between «Vydubychi» and «Osokorky» stations. Consequently, passengers cannot cross the Dnipro directly via the green metro line.
The Kyiv City State Administration has also warned that the intervals between trains may be extended. This is due to the specific arrangements for train operations on isolated sections of the line.
The city authorities will provide further information regarding the resumption of the metro’s normal timetable.
Taxi fares in Kyiv have risen amid transport restrictions
Transport difficulties have also affected demand for services taxi. Some passengers who are unable to use their usual metro route are forced to find alternative ways of reaching their destination.
Against a backdrop of traffic congestion and rising demand, users are reporting that journeys have become more expensive. The greatest inconvenience is being experienced on routes between the right and left banks of the capital.
Taxi services usually use dynamic pricing. This means that the cost of a journey may automatically increase when the number of bookings exceeds the number of available vehicles.
The Kyiv City State Administration is increasing the number of buses due to restrictions on the metro
To partially compensate for the lack of a Green Line metro service across the Dnipro, the city council has announced an increase in the number of buses on routes 22 and 91.
On route No. 22, there are plans to increase the number of buses from 10 to 12. Five of them will operate on a shortened route — from Trostyanetska Street to the «Lybidska» metro station. On route No. 91, five buses will operate instead of three.
These changes should help to spread passenger flows and reduce the strain on the city’s transport system.
When will traffic resume on the South Bridge?
No exact dates have yet been announced for the full resumption of services on the Green Line via the South Bridge. Experts must assess the condition of the damaged structures and determine the extent of the necessary repair work. It is unsafe to resume full train services until the relevant inspections have been completed.
The Kyiv City State Administration urges passengers to keep an eye on official metro announcements and to take temporary transport changes into account when planning their journeys.
