Putin agreed to a new round of talks following his meeting with Witkoff
Vladimir Putin agreed to hold a new round tripartite talks following a meeting with Steve Witkoff in St Petersburg, which took place about two weeks ago.
These contacts formed part of the Trump administration’s diplomatic efforts to restart the negotiation process.
Preliminary talks between Ukraine, the US and Russia, mediated by the US, took place in February 2026. Following this, the process became more complicated due to events in the Middle East and the persistence of fundamental differences between Kyiv and Moscow.
The parties continue to have significant differences regarding the terms of a possible peaceful settlement.
This round does not include a confirmed meeting either Vladimir Zelensky, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. This specifically refers to working-level talks between representatives of the three countries.
The US will hold separate talks with Europe and NATO
Ahead of the meeting in Abu Dhabi, the US delegation will hold consultations in Brussels with representatives from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the European Union and NATO.
According to Witkoff, these talks are scheduled for this week.
The main focus will be on security guarantees for Ukraine, the future architecture of European security, and economic support for the post-war reconstruction of the Ukrainian state.
The US side intends to build on the results of previous diplomatic contacts in Kyiv, Oslo and St Petersburg to prepare further agreements.
Vitkoff stated that the aim of these efforts remains the conclusion of a comprehensive and long-term peace agreement.
Zelenskyy had previously discussed trilateral talks with Erdogan
Back on 31 October, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, announced that preparations were under way for a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the US and Russia in the first half of November.
The Head of State discussed this issue during meetings with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul.
Zelenskyy stated that the parties had discussed the prospects of involving Turkey and European partners, as well as the possibility of holding talks on Turkish territory.
The Ukrainian president also emphasised the need for Russia to take concrete steps towards de-escalation and for continued international support for Ukraine.
However, the US side has chosen Abu Dhabi as the venue for the next round of talks.
