In the Bucha district of the Kyiv region, a large-scale fire broke out at a warehouse complex following a Russian attack. Additional State Emergency Service personnel from various regions of Ukraine have been deployed to tackle the blaze. The work of the rescue teams is being hampered by repeated air raid alerts and the constant presence of Russian drones near the site of the strike. According to preliminary reports, one person has been injured. The situation was reported by Viktoria Ruban, spokesperson for the State Emergency Service in the Kyiv region.
A fire broke out at a warehouse complex in the Bucha district
Russian troops attacked the Bucha district late in the evening of 4 November. Following the strike, a major fire broke out on the premises of the warehouses, and efforts to extinguish it continued throughout the night and into the following morning.
The Kyiv Regional Military Administration has confirmed a fire caused by a Russian attack. According to local authorities, storage facilities in Sofiivska Borshchahivka were hit. Eyewitnesses reported that the flames were visible from a considerable distance.
Fire and rescue services arrived at the scene and began extinguishing the fire and protecting neighbouring buildings from the spread of the blaze. The exact area affected by the fire, the extent of the damage to the warehouse premises and the scale of the material losses have not yet been determined.
Rescue workers are operating under the threat of further attacks
Firefighting efforts are being hampered by the fact that Russian drones continue to be present in the airspace near the scene of the fire.
According to a spokeswoman for the State Emergency Service of Kyiv Oblast Viktoria Ruban, additional resources were deployed to deal with the aftermath. Rescue workers from other regions of Ukraine arrived to assist the local units.
Air raid sirens force firefighters to temporarily halt their work and move to safe locations. Once the danger has passed, they return to the warehouse complex and resume firefighting operations.
Due to such enforced interruptions, it takes longer to extinguish the fire. The presence of rescue workers near the damaged building poses additional risks whilst the air strikes are ongoing.
Units have been deployed to ensure that the clean-up operations continue uninterrupted, as far as the security situation permits.
One person was injured as a result of the Russian attack
According to preliminary reports, one person was injured as a result of the attack.
The local authorities have clarified that the person in question is a security guard at the warehouse premises. The injured person is receiving the necessary medical treatment.
The relevant authorities are currently ascertaining details regarding other possible casualties and the full extent of the damage caused by the shelling.
Local government representatives also urged members of the public not to disclose the exact coordinates of the targets hit or any information that might help Russian forces to adjust their subsequent strikes.
The Bucha district has repeatedly come under Russian attack on warehousing and logistics infrastructure. During the autumn alone, the emergency services extinguished several large-scale fires at businesses in the district following drone attacks.
Following the attack on 4 November, the emergency services are focusing their efforts on extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.
