What is known about the disaster off the coast of Senegal

A boat sank in the Kebemer area in north-western Senegal, approximately 180 kilometres from the country’s capital, Dakar. According to local media reports, the vessel capsized on 7 November near the coastal dunes of Lumpoul.

The Senegalese Ministry of the Interior reported that as of Saturday evening Rescuers recovered the bodies of 21 victims from the water and found one survivor. The authorities described these figures as preliminary, as the search operation is not yet complete.

It is not yet known how many people were on board at the time of the accident. Nor has the official cause of the ship’s sinking been established. According to local press reports, most of the victims were from the Leon and Tjepe areas in the Kebemer department.

The Ministry of the Interior has stated that the families of the victims are being provided with the necessary support. The country’s Minister of the Interior is expected to visit the scene of the tragedy on 9 November.

The dangerous route from West Africa to Europe

The coast of Senegal is one of the departure points for migrants attempting to reach the Canary Islands — a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Small fishing boats, which are not suited to long voyages across the open sea, are often used for the crossing.

The journey is made more difficult by strong currents, changeable weather, overloaded vessels and a lack of rescue equipment. In the event of an accident, help may be delayed due to the considerable distance from the shore.

According to the human rights organisation Walking Borders, at least 635 people died on the route from West Africa to the Canary Islands in the first five months of 2026 alone.

The Canary Islands have been hit by a new wave of migration

The tragedy off the coast of Senegal occurred against a backdrop of a rise in the number of migrants arriving in Spain by sea. On 7 November, a state of emergency was declared on the island of El Hierro due to a sharp increase in the number of arrivals.

According to local authorities, more than 3,300 migrants have reached the island since the beginning of November, travelling in around 30 boats. The rise in the number of arrivals is placing an additional strain on the services responsible for receiving and accommodating people.

Meanwhile, the Senegalese authorities are continuing their search operations near Kebemer. The final figures for the number of dead and missing are to be determined once the operation has been completed.
