Donald Trump receives Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House

President Donald Trump officially received the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman at the White House. The visit was accompanied by considerable solemnity - the ceremony took place on the south lawn, where French and American flags, diplomatic notes and symbols underlined the level of the reception.

The parties focused the discussion on three key areas:

  • Defence cooperation - The US is ready to sell F-35 fighters to Saudi Arabia (demand for 48 units).

  • Civil nuclear power and technology - The parties plan to develop partnership in this area.

  • Business investments - Saudi Arabia has previously pledged to invest about $600 billion in the US; Trump intends to step up «a number of targeted projects».

However, despite the high expectations, a decisive breakthrough in the normalisation of Saudi Arabia's relations with Israel is not planned for this meeting.

Context.

Ensuring transparency in relations with the kingdom has long been difficult after the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The United States believed that the crown prince had authorised the operation, although he denies direct supervision.

This visit plays a significant role in establishing a new defence and economic order in the Gulf and the Middle East, strengthening the strategic partnership between the world's largest economy and one of the leading oil exporters.
