WP: Trump barely dives into details of peace plan
President of the United States Donald Trump practically does not dive into the content of the peace plan for Ukraine and mainly relies on its advisors. This was reported by the The Washington Post citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
According to the publication, the American president reacts to key proposals rather aloofly, limiting himself to phrases such as: «Okay, let's see what happens». This behaviour, according to WP's interlocutors, indicates a low level of Trump's personal involvement in the drafting of the document.
Context.
The US peace plan is being actively discussed at the level of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and administration advisers. They are the ones who are conducting intensive consultations with Ukraine and European capitals, trying to coordinate their positions.
Despite Rubio's statements about «significant progress» in Geneva, WP sources emphasise that:
The key elements of the document are formed by advisers,
Trump usually reads their proposals superficially,
The president mainly evaluates the political effect, not the content of the agreement.
Analysts suggest that this approach may make it difficult to reach a final agreed formula, as important decisions may be postponed or passed down the line.
