Latvia considers complete dismantling of railway tracks to terrorist country
Latvia is officially considering the possibility of complete dismantling of railway tracks, leading to the Russian border. This was reported by the newspaper LSM, and the country's president Edgars Rinkevics confirmed that the relevant decision could be made as early as early 2026.
According to the head of state, the tense situation on the eastern border will not disappear in the near future, and dismantling the infrastructure that provides direct communication with Russia is one of the options for responding to the risks.
Reasons for considering this scenario
Rinkēvičs stressed that the Latvian authorities are evaluating all possible measures to strengthen national security. The dismantling of the tracks may be part of a broader strategy to limit transport interaction with Russia, which poses a military and political threat to the region.
The government has also noted an increase in hybrid provocations on the borders of the Baltic states and growing risks associated with transit flows.
Baltic coordination
Latvia plans to discuss the issue of dismantling with partners in the region Lithuania and Estonia. The goal is to develop a common security position and avoid infrastructure gaps between countries.
The Baltic governments are already working on comprehensive border security measures and joint threat assessments.
