Australia and New Zealand join PURL programme to support Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Mark Rütte confirmed that Australia and New Zealand have officially joined the international PURL programme, a mechanism that allows partners to finance the purchase of US arms for Ukraine.
Rutte stressed that in recent weeks, «burden-sharing has become much better» and the participation of Indo-Pacific countries provides a more stable and predictable flow of arms.
Assistance packages announced
Australia announced a new support package worth $63 million, of which:
$33 million will be sent as part of the PURL;
$1.3 million - into the Drone Coalition;
$28 million will be spent on military equipment, including air defence radars, ammunition and engineering equipment.
New Zealand highlights $8.7 million, and the entire amount is sent directly through the PURL mechanism.
The value of partnership
According to Rutte, Australia and New Zealand's joining the PURL demonstrates the global nature of support for Ukraine and creates a more reliable system of joint funding for defence assistance.
The PURL programme is seen by NATO as a key tool to maintain the flow of weapons from US stockpiles and accelerate the delivery of critical systems for Ukraine's defence.
