Trump lifts sanctions against Belarus: US allows exports of Belarusian potash
The United States lifts sanctions on Belarusian potash exports by presidential order Donald Trump. This was stated by the US representative John Cole, commenting on the change in sanctions policy towards Minsk.
According to him, the decision has already entered into force.
«Following President Trump's instructions, the US is lifting sanctions on potash. I think this is a very good step for Belarus from the US side. We are lifting them now,» Cole said.
Further steps on sanctions
A representative of the US side stressed that dialogue on sanctions will continue and in the future.
«As relations between the two countries normalise, more and more sanctions will be lifted,» he said.
Cole also expressed hope that in the future the parties could come to complete cancellation of the sanctions regime.
Context.
Belarusian potash is one of the country's key export commodities and plays an important role in the global fertiliser market. Sanctions against the sector have previously severely limited the Lukashenko regime's foreign exchange earnings.
The US decision may affect Global fertiliser market, and the political dynamics of Washington's relations with Minsk and its ally, Russia.
