A portrait of an economist and symbols of three countries

The coin was made of nickel silver. A portrait is featured on its reverse Bogdana Havrylyshyn, his name and the phrase «DREAM BIG», which the NBU describes as reflecting the figure’s philosophy of life: to dream big, think globally and work for the future of Ukraine.

The obverse features a bouquet of viburnum, a maple leaf and an edelweiss. The National Bank explained that these plants symbolise Ukraine, Canada and Switzerland — countries that played an important role in Gavrylyshyn’s life and development. The floral design is also intended to convey the presence of Ukrainian figures in global science and culture.

An artist worked on the coin’s design Yurko Hutsulyak and sculptors Volodymyr Atamanchuk and Anatoliy Demyanenko.

Havrylyshyn worked in Geneva and took part in the Davos Forum

Bohdan Hawrylyshyn was born in the Ternopil region, but due to forced emigration, he spent a significant part of his life abroad. He lived and worked in Canada and Switzerland, whilst maintaining ties with Ukraine.

The economist headed the International Institute of Management in Geneva. He was also involved in founding the European Management Forum in Davos, which later became known as the World Economic Forum.

Following Ukraine’s declaration of independence, Havrylyshyn played a part in the country’s development and advised the Ukrainian leadership on matters of public administration and economic reform. He contributed to the development of management education and civil society.
