Verkhovna Rada creates a working group on possible presidential elections under martial law

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is forming a working group to promptly study the issue of possible presidential elections in Ukraine under martial law. This was announced by the head of the Servant of the People faction« David Arahamia.

Details of the initiative

According to Arakhamia, the working group is being set up in accordance with previous agreements in parliament. The issue will be discussed by on the basis of a specialised committee of the Verkhovna Rada on the organisation of state power, local self-government, regional development and urban planning.

They plan to involve them in the work:

  • representatives All factions and parliamentary groups Parliament;

  • Central Election Commission;

  • NGOs specialising in the electoral process;

  • media representatives.

Date and time of the first meeting of the working group not yet determined. At the same time, the Verkhovna Rada emphasises that the format of the discussions involves publicity and the involvement of a wide range of experts.

The issue of holding elections under martial law remains one of the most sensitive in Ukraine's political and legal environment. The current legislation prohibits holding elections during martial law, but discussions are ongoing around possible scenarios after the security situation changes or within the framework of international consultations.
