Ukraine initiates an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and the NATO-Ukraine Council over Russia's Oreshnik strike«

Ukraine initiates an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and the NATO-Ukraine Council in connection with Russia's strike with an intermediate-range ballistic missile of the Oreshnik type in the Lviv region. This was announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga.

According to him, such a strike near the borders of the European Union and NATO is a serious threat to security on the European continent and is a test for the entire transatlantic community.

Details of the application

Sibiga noted that Ukraine is already informing The United States, European partners, all interested states and international organisations through diplomatic channels about the circumstances and consequences of this strike.

The minister stressed that Russia is trying to justify the attack with a fake version of the alleged «attack on Putin's residence», which did not actually take place. According to him, this once again confirms that the Kremlin does not need real reasons to escalate war and terror.

He also emphasised that the use of ballistic missiles near the EU and NATO borders is a global threat, which requires an immediate and collective international response.

Ukraine's requirements for partners

The Foreign Minister called for increased pressure on Russia, in particular:

  • take tougher measures against of the Russian shadow tanker fleet;

  • limit russia's oil revenues and financial schemes;

  • expand sanctions pressure on Russian assets not only in the EU but also globally;

  • publicly refute Russian disinformation and strengthen the international isolation of the aggressor.

According to Sibiga, delaying the response only encourages further escalation on the part of Moscow.

Context.

Russia announced the use of an Oreshnik missile against territory near Ukraine's western borders, which caused concern among European partners. The strike took place in close proximity to the borders of the EU and NATO countries, which increases the risk of regional destabilisation.

Ukraine systematically raises the issue of increasing international pressure on Russia in response to the use of high-precision and ballistic weapons against civilians and critical infrastructure.
