Trump calls on NATO to immediately withdraw Denmark from Greenland

President of the United States Donald Trump issued a strong statement on Denmark's role in the Arctic, calling on NATO to demand that Copenhagen immediately withdraw its forces from Greenland.

«Tell Denmark to get them out of here immediately. Two dog sleds are not enough. Only the United States can do it,» Trump said.

Trump's statement

The American president questioned Denmark's ability to ensure the security of the strategically important region, emphasising that Greenland is key to NATO and US defence.

According to Trump, only American military resources can effectively deter threats in the Arctic, given the growing military activity of major powers.

Threats in the Arctic

More Last year, Danish intelligence warned about Military intentions of Russia and China on Greenland and the Arctic region in general. The reports included:

  • Expansion of Russia's military presence in the Arctic;

  • China's infrastructure and scientific projects with potential dual-use;

  • increased geopolitical competition for control over transport routes and resources.

Context.

Greenland, which is formally part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has Strategic location between North America and Europe. The United States already has a military presence there, including an air base Thule (Pituffik Space Base), which plays a key role in the early warning and missile defence system.

Trump's statements may indicate Washington's intention to strengthen control over Arctic security against the backdrop of escalating global confrontation.
