Washington is also ready to continue to provide assistance through the PURL initiative.

Pentagon statement at the Ramstein meeting«

At the Ramstein meeting, a Pentagon representative Elbridge Colby called on European countries to step up their defence efforts. He stressed the importance of Europe not only supporting Ukraine but also strengthening its own security.

Colby emphasised that reducing dependence on the US for arms supplies is key to sustained support for Ukraine. In his opinion, such a strategy will help ensure long-term peace in the region.

The need for a stable arms supply system

The Pentagon believes that a stable arms supply system is critical to ending the war on the basis of a lasting peace. Colby noted that continued support for Ukraine directly depends on the determination and capacity of European countries.

The US side insists that Europe should play a more active role in providing Ukraine with with the necessary weapons. This will help to share the burden and strengthen Euro-Atlantic security.

The PURL initiative and the call to Europe

The United States reaffirmed its readiness to continue to assist Ukraine through the PURL. Washington is calling on European countries to use this mechanism more actively to meet the critical needs of the Ukrainian army.

The Pentagon stressed that cooperation within the PURL allows for more effective coordination of efforts between allies. This, according to the US side, is an important step towards achieving sustainable support for Ukraine.

Context and next steps

The US calls came against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities in Ukraine and the growing need for modern weapons. European countries are now deciding how to increase their defence budgets and step up procurement.

The issue of responsibility sharing between the allies remains a key one in the Ramstein format.
