Last night, Odesa region was once again targeted by a Russian attack. The shelling caused fires in residential buildings, an outbuilding and a garage, and injured people and infrastructure. Rescuers quickly extinguished the fires, but the consequences remain serious.
Russian shelling causes large-scale fires in Odesa region
On the night of 29 April, Russian troops launched another attack on Odesa region. According to information local services, the shelling caused fires in residential buildings, an outbuilding and a garage. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, preventing further spread. A truck was damaged, and the facade and glazing of a multi-storey residential building were damaged, although fire was avoided.
The debris that fell on the territory of the Danube Biosphere Reserve set fire to reeds. Rescuers and the National Guard of Ukraine are continuing to deal with the aftermath of the attack.
There are casualties and damage to the hospital
The shelling injured two people who were in the residential sector. They received medical assistance. Of particular concern is the destruction of the reception area of the local hospital, where a fire also broke out. Patients and staff were promptly evacuated to another medical facility, which avoided casualties among patients and medical staff.
As a result of the attack, not only residential and commercial buildings were damaged, but also the following facilities critical infrastructure, This complicates the work of local services. Rescuers continue to work at the scene, assessing the extent of the damage and helping the victims.
The work of rescuers and the National Guard
Forty-nine firefighters and nine pieces of equipment from the State Emergency Service were engaged in the aftermath of the night attack. A unit of the National Guard of Ukraine also responded, providing 1 unit of equipment and 4 servicemen. Together, they managed to contain the fires and minimise further damage.
The rapid response of the services prevented the fire from spreading more widely, especially in residential areas. However, the consequences of the attack will still have to be addressed in the coming days, particularly in the areas of health and environment.
