Terekhov urges not to raise tariffs and taxes for private entrepreneurs during the war

Raising utility tariffs for households and introducing new taxes for individual entrepreneurs during a full-scale war is unacceptable. This was stated by Kharkiv Mayor, head of the Association of Frontline Cities and Communities Igor Terekhov, addressing Ukraine's international partners.

According to him, financial support from the EU, the IMF and other partners is critical, but it is unfair to make decisions that increase financial pressure on citizens in wartime.

«War is not the time for shock decisions»

Igor Terekhov stressed that the increase in tariffs, the growing tax burden on individual entrepreneurs and the possible reduction of subsidies will hit the frontline regions particularly hard.

«We are grateful to the EU, the IMF and all our partners for their financial support. But war is not the time for shock decisions that fall on those who already bear the heaviest burden. It is unfair to raise taxes for individual entrepreneurs, increase tariffs or cancel subsidies when hundreds of thousands of families are without electricity and heat,» said the mayor of Kharkiv.

Criteria for government decisions

The mayor emphasised that all economic decisions in times of war should be made one key test - whether they help people survive.

«Any decision should pass one test: whether it makes people stronger or leaves them without support,» Terekhov said.

Context.

According to the mayor of Kharkiv, Ukrainian society is already paying extremely high price for the war, as well as for the international compromises necessary to support the state.

«The entire Ukrainian people are paying an extremely high price for this. Moreover, we are now paying for international compromises with our blood,» he stressed.

The statement came amid discussions about the possible review of tariff policy and tax changes within the framework of Ukraine's cooperation with international financial institutions.
