Bulgaria has reaffirmed its support for Ukraine
On 1 July 2026, the Bulgarian National Assembly reaffirmed its support for Ukraine by keeping in force the 10-year security agreement signed on 30 March in Kyiv. The pro-Russian «Revival» party attempted to repeal the agreement, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
According to the results of the vote, 160 MPs voted against the cancellation of the agreement, whilst only 10 supported the initiative. A further 14 MPs abstained. This vote sent a clear signal of Bulgaria’s solidarity with Ukraine, despite attempts by pro-Russian forces.
MPs from the «Vidrodzhennia» party, such as Georgi Georgiev, sought to justify their position by arguing that the agreement had been signed by an interim Cabinet of Ministers which lacked a legitimate mandate. However, the majority of MPs rejected these arguments. Sylvia Hristova, a Member of Parliament for «Progressive Bulgaria», emphasised that, according to a ruling by the Constitutional Court, Parliament has no right to interfere with the government’s executive powers.
The context of the transaction
Security agreement between Bulgaria and Ukraine provides for stable political, economic and defence support, as well as deeper cooperation in the military-technical sphere. The failure of the attempt to repeal the agreement has once again confirmed that Bulgaria’s Euro-Atlantic course remains unchanged, despite changes in government and domestic political disputes. This development underlines the importance of international support for Ukraine in the face of current challenges.
