The UN Security Council is to discuss Ukraine on 24 August
In the United Nations’ official agenda, the meeting is listed under the heading «Maintaining peace and security in Ukraine». It will take place in the UN Security Council Chamber in New York.
Just before the start, at 14:45 local time, the Danish Foreign Minister is scheduled to address the press Lars Lukke Rasmussen along with representatives from other countries. The meeting itself will begin in 15 minutes.
The date has symbolic significance — On 24 August, Ukraine will mark the 35th anniversary of the declaration of independence.
The meeting was initiated by five European countries
According to Ukrainian media reports, the Security Council meeting was convened by Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia and the United Kingdom.
The main topic is expected to be the continuation of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine and the security situation following the latest missile and drone attacks.
The meeting is taking place against the backdrop of the Russian Federation’s latest large-scale strikes on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. In particular, on 20 August, international partners publicly condemned the massive Russian attack and called for increased support for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian issue is regularly brought before the UN Security Council
The Security Council has held numerous meetings on Russia’s war against Ukraine, the massive attacks on civilian infrastructure, the treatment of prisoners of war and other consequences of the aggression.
On 10 August, a separate meeting was also held in the Arria format, at the initiative of Latvia and the United Kingdom, on prisoners of war, civilian hostages and compliance with international humanitarian law in the context of the Russian Federation’s war.
Today’s meeting 24 August will provide another opportunity for Ukraine and its partners to bring the issue of Russian aggression before the UN’s highest body responsible for international peace and security.
