In Bila Tserkva, two young men attacked a 35-year-old visitor to a restaurant with a knife because of a religious greeting. The victim was saved by doctors, and the attackers were detained. The court imposed on them a pre-trial restraint of detention without bail.
Circumstances of the attack
According to the police, a 35-year-old man entered a Bila Tserkva establishment and greeted with the words «Christ is Risen!». This provoked aggression from a 19-year-old visitor, a supporter of another religion.
The young man called his 23-year-old friend for help. Together they attacked the man, stabbing him in the stomach and neck.
Actions of the attackers and rescue of the victim
After the attack, both attackers fled the scene, believing that the victim had died. The man was hospitalised in serious condition and doctors managed to save his life.
The police quickly identified and detained the attackers. They are charged with attempted premeditated murder on the grounds of religious intolerance.
Court decision
Both suspects were served a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 15, Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code (attempted murder on the grounds of religious intolerance).
The court imposed on them a pre-trial restraint in the form of detention without bail. The investigation is ongoing.
