In Kyiv, from 30 October, traffic across the South Bridge from the left bank to the right bank of the Dnipro is gradually being resumed. In the first phase, only one lane will be open to vehicles weighing up to 10 tonnes, including passenger cars. This was announced by the Kyiv City Military Administration. The decision was taken following a technical inspection of the bridge and an assessment of the safety of its continued use.
- From 30 October, traffic will resume across the South Bridge in Kyiv, from the left bank to the right bank.
- Vehicles weighing up to 10 tonnes will be permitted to use one lane.
- Traffic travelling from the right bank to the left bank remains closed for the time being.
How the South Bridge will operate from 30 October
Traffic is being restored in stages. Initially, vehicles will only be able to use a single lane travelling from the left bank of the capital to the right.
In the opposite direction — from the right bank to the left bank — the South Bridge remains closed for the time being. Technical work is currently underway in this area.
The restrictions also apply to vehicle weight. In the first phase, only vehicles weighing no more than 10 tonnes will be permitted to cross the bridge.
Why was the South Bridge closed?
The crossing was damaged as a result of Russian attack in Kyiv on 27 October. The strike damaged parts of the bridge structures, roadways, utility networks and the underground railway infrastructure.
Due to the need to check the structural integrity of the bridge, traffic has been temporarily suspended in both directions.
Experts carried out engineering surveys, geodetic monitoring and inspections of the condition of the damaged structures. The initial findings of the investigations made it possible to resume traffic on a limited basis.
When will the bridge and the underground resume full operations?
Municipal enterprises, in collaboration with academics, are continuing to work on solutions for repairing the damaged structures of the South Bridge.
Particular attention is being paid to the infrastructure of the Syretsko-Pecherska metro line, which was also damaged as a result of the Russian attack.
At present, trains on the green line are running on separate sections — from «Syrets» to «Vydubychi» and from «Osokorky» to «Chervonyi Khutir».
No dates have yet been announced for the full resumption of road and rail services across the South Bridge.
