Ukrainian border guards are continuing to strengthen defences along the northern border amid the risk of possible aggression from Belarus. In potentially dangerous areas, they are digging anti-tank trenches, erecting multi-layered barbed-wire barriers and installing concrete «dragon’s teeth». A report by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine details the preparation of defensive lines and the creation of the so-called «buffer zone».
A multi-tiered defence system is being established at the border
The fortifications along the northern border are designed to hinder any advance by enemy military equipment and personnel. Border guards are demonstrating anti-tank trenches, concrete barriers and several lines of barbed-wire entanglements.
In the State Border Guard Service’s report, this set of measures is described as preparation for «zones» — areas where, should the enemy attempt an advance, it would come under fire from Ukrainian forces. However, the specific details of the defensive positions and their locations are not disclosed for security reasons.
Border guards are monitoring the situation from the Belarusian side
Ukrainian units continue to monitor the situation on the other side of the state border and are preparing to respond to any changes in the situation. Defences are being organised in light of the experience of the full-scale invasion of 2022, when Russian troops used Belarusian territory to launch an offensive against Ukraine’s northern regions.
Particular attention is paid to the border areas along the Dnieper and to the islands, where the nature of the terrain requires different methods of surveillance and defence.
However, the State Border Guard Service’s announcement regarding the preparation of defences does not in itself mean that an attack from Belarus has already begun or that a decision has been taken regarding it. This refers to preparatory measures for a potential scenario and the maintenance of constant defence readiness.
Engineering barriers are intended to slow down a possible advance
Anti-tank ditches and concrete structures are not regarded as a standalone means of halting an advance. Their purpose is to restrict the manoeuvrability of vehicles, direct them onto designated routes and create conditions for engaging the enemy.
It is precisely the combination of engineering obstacles, surveillance and firepower that is intended to transform potential breakthrough routes into defensive sectors that are difficult to overcome.
Ukraine is thus continuing to strengthen its northern front, regardless of the current level of military activity in Belarus. These pre-established defences give the Defence Forces greater scope to respond should the situation at the border change.
