She also reiterated the threat of a massive missile strike on Kyiv if the Ukrainian authorities act during the 9 May celebrations.

Trump supports ceasefire for 8-9 May

President of the United States Donald Trump declared support for Russia's initiative to temporarily ceasefire for 8-9 May. This was reported by a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova. According to her, Trump positively assessed the Russian proposal for a ceasefire for these dates.

According to Zakharova, Russia took the initiative to establish a ceasefire on the days when Russia traditionally celebrates Victory Day.

Threats against Kyiv on 9 May

In addition to announcing her support for the ceasefire, Maria Zakharova also repeated her earlier threat of a possible massive missile strike on Kyiv. She emphasised that such a scenario is possible if the Ukrainian authorities try to implement Zelenskyy's «threats» during the 9 May parade.

Zakharova stressed that Russia is closely following the statements of the Ukrainian leadership and is ready to take decisive action in response. Her words once again increase tensions around possible events in Kyiv on the days of commemorative dates for Russia.

Reaction to the statement and possible consequences

Trump's support for Russia's initiative could affect the international context surrounding the war in Ukraine. The US president's statement may be perceived as a signal to other Western politicians about possible ways to resolve the conflict.

At the same time, the recurrence of threats against Kyiv raises concerns about the safety of civilians during mass events. The Ukrainian authorities have to take these risks into account when planning any actions in the capital on the dates in question.

Why it matters

Support for Russian initiatives by Western politicians, even former ones, can influence the perception of the war in Ukraine in the world. Such statements can change the tone of international discussions on how to achieve peace or a truce.

The threats of missile attacks on Kyiv underline the seriousness of the challenges for the Ukrainian authorities on days when mass gatherings traditionally take place. This creates additional tension between Ukraine and Russia and requires increased security measures in the capital.
