Entry to Europe in question for hundreds of thousands of Russians
The European Union is working on a mechanism that would ban Russian military personnel who took part in the war against Ukraine from entering the Schengen area. This was announced by the head of EU diplomacy Kaya Kallas.
What the EU is planning
According to her, the new restrictions could cover hundreds of thousands of former Russian military personnel. It is a systemic solution that should make it impossible for them to enter the Schengen countries after the end of hostilities.
The mechanism is being developed as part of the EU's migration policy.
Approval procedure
As the issue falls within the scope of migration, the decision will require the approval of a qualified majority of EU member states.
Brussels expects to prepare restrictions by the time a ceasefire is possible.
Context.
The EU has already imposed a number of personal sanctions against Russian military and officials over the war against Ukraine. The new mechanism could become one of the largest restrictive steps against those involved in the aggression.
