Valeriy Zaluzhny, former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, stated that Russia’s war against Ukraine has taken on a global dimension, and therefore it cannot be brought to an end by a decision taken by Kyiv or Moscow alone. In an interview with Channel 24, he called for efforts to be made to find a global solution that is fair to Ukraine, whilst at the same time preparing the country for a protracted conflict.

Involved He said that the war, which has been raging in Europe for twelve years now, cannot be regarded as a local or regional conflict. According to him, it has taken on a global dimension, and therefore a decision by Ukraine alone, or by Russia alone, is not enough to bring it to an end.

Zaluzhny described a global solution, under which Ukraine would secure its place on the geopolitical map and the right to a secure existence, as the ideal option. He also spoke of economic preferential treatment, investment, opportunities for development and the prospect of being part of the civilised world, particularly the West.
In his view, such a decision would need to reflect the broader meaning of victory: not only the cessation of hostilities, but also security, a future and justice for citizens. At the same time, Zaluzhny expressed doubt as to whether a comprehensive solution is realistic at this stage.
Ukraine must stand firm and build a self-sufficient state
Ukraine must continue to fight so as not to lose what it has, Zaluzhny believes. He stressed that Ukrainians should not count on NATO or the president of another country to do this for them.
Zaluzhny described the current conflict as a war of attrition. In these circumstances, he said, it is essential to hold out, adapt to technological changes, move away from traditional notions of warfare, and chart a course towards ending the war.
He suggested another option: building a Ukraine that adapts to these conditions and is able to exist as a strong, self-sufficient state. He cited Israel as an example of a country that has adapted to difficult conditions.
In his view, such a state must itself ensure security, economic development and justice. Ukraine will become truly independent when its security depends on itself, the country has prospects for development, and its citizens have the right to choose their own future, said Zaluzhny.
