NATO may invoke the collective defence clause against Iran
NATO Secretary General Mark Rütte said the Alliance could consider the use of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which provides for collective defence, in the context of the escalating situation around Iran.
According to him, the allies are closely monitoring developments and are ready to respond in case of a threat to NATO member states.
What does the collective defence article provide for
Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty states that an attack on one Ally is seen as an attack on all Allies.
In such a case, NATO states can take joint military, political and other measures to defend the country under attack.
This mechanism has been officially used only once in history - after the terrorist attacks in the United States on 11 September 2001.
Tensions in the Middle East are rising
The NATO Secretary General's statement came amid a rapid escalation in the Middle East, where strikes between Iran, the United States and allies have been taking place in recent days.
Allies are also increasing their military presence in the region and strengthening their air defence systems.
Context.
Experts note that the possible discussion of Article 5 indicates The seriousness of threats to the security of NATO Allies.
In the event of a direct attack on an Ally, this could result in a large-scale international military response.
