Airlines raise prices due to rising fuel costs

Global airlines have started to raise ticket prices in response to Sharp rise in aviation fuel costs following the escalation of the geopolitical situation in the Middle East. This is reported by the agency Ukrmedia News.

With oil prices rising, airlines are trying to compensate rise in price of one of the main cost items - jet fuel, which this year is significantly higher than the average for previous years.

Who raised fares for which flights and for what

According to Ukrmedia News:

  • Qantas Airways has already increased tariffs for international flights due to rising fuel costs.

  • Air New Zealand has raised ticket prices on domestic and international routes and temporarily suspended its 2026 revenue forecast due to market uncertainty.

  • Scandinavian Airlines System also increased airfares due to a significant rise in the price of aviation fuel.

These changes have affected both short-haul and long-haul international routes, particularly in Europe and Asia, where some carriers are also increasing fuel surcharges to the tariffs.

Reasons for the rise in price

The factors that put pressure on airline costs are:

  • Rapidly rising oil and jet fuel prices - Earlier, prices were around $85-$90 per barrel, and now they are reaching much higher levels;

  • closure of airspace over certain regions due to security risks, which affects routes and operating costs;

  • market volatility and risks due to conflicts in the Middle East.

Market experts note that Fuel is a significant part of airline costs, and continued price volatility could lead to further a wider increase in ticket prices in the coming months.
