Tomorrow Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine plans to consider a draft law on de-anonymisation of Telegram channels. This was reported by the MP Irina Gerashchenko.
The initiative provides for the introduction of new rules for popular channels in Telegram, that may oblige their administrators to officially register and disclose their identity.
What does the draft law on de-anonymisation of Telegram provide for?
According to the MP, the document is aimed at combating disinformation and manipulation in social media.
If the law is passed, large channels may face new requirements:
disclosure of the channel administrator's identity
official registration of popular channels
responsibility for the content shared
Such rules are expected to reduce the spread of fake news and make the information space more transparent.
Why it matters
Telegram has become one of the main sources of news for Ukrainians during the war. Many large channels have hundreds of thousands or even millions of subscribers.
However, a significant number of these channels work anonymously, This makes it difficult to bring to justice in case of dissemination of false information or propaganda.
What's next
The draft law may be submitted to parliament tomorrow. If MPs support the document, the rules of operation of large Telegram channels in Ukraine may change.
Experts believe that the adoption of such a law could have a significant impact on the media market and the operation of popular information channels.
