The Armed Forces of Ukraine struck a number of military targets of the Russian aggressor near Starobilsk. An oil refinery, ammunition depots, air defence facilities and command posts, including the headquarters of the Rubicon unit, were hit.

Basic context

On the night of 22 May 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted precision strikes on the military infrastructure of the Russian occupiers. Among the affected facilities are oil refinery, ammunition depots, air defence facilities, as well as enemy command and control points and manpower.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stressed that all actions are carried out in strict accordance with international humanitarian law, laws and customs of war. At the same time, the General Staff responded to manipulative information in the Russian media about the alleged damage to civilian infrastructure in the temporarily occupied territories.

The defeat of the Rubicon headquarters and the strategic significance of the strikes

One of the key targets was the headquarters of the Rubicon unit near the town of Starobilsk. This has a significant impact on the ability of Russian troops to coordinate their actions in this area of the frontline.

The destruction of the oil refinery and ammunition depots deprives the enemy of important logistical support and resources for combat operations. Destroying air defence assets reduces the enemy's ability to counter Ukrainian air operations.

These strikes reflect the Armed Forces' systematic approach to weakening the aggressor's military capabilities, which has a significant impact on the further course of hostilities and the safety of civilians in the liberated territories.

Responsibility and compliance with the rules of war

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine emphasises that all military operations are conducted in compliance with international humanitarian law. The absence of damage to civilian infrastructure confirms the commitment of the Ukrainian military to minimise harm to civilians.

The reaction to disinformation in the Russian media shows that information warfare is an integral part of the war. The General Staff calls for a critical attitude towards information sources that spread false claims about alleged strikes on civilian objects.

Thus, the actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have not only a tactical, but also a strategic and moral dimension aimed at protecting Ukraine and restoring its territorial integrity.
