DPRK shows a copy of the US HIMARS: new launcher on parade in Pyongyang
At a military parade in Pyongyang North Korea unveils new multiple launch rocket system, which is almost identical to the US HIMARS in terms of its shape and layout.
The system was demonstrated during a nighttime passage of military equipment through the central square of the capital, which was attended by senior DPRK leaders.
Two launch cells for different types of missiles
According to analytical sources, The launcher has two separate sections:
the first one is for launching 240-mm unguided missiles,
the second - presumably for Hwasong-11 type ballistic missile.
This solution can provide the system with double functionality - from striking close targets to launching short-range ballistic missiles.
Similarity to HIMARS
Externally, the new installation completely copies the architecture of the American M142 HIMARS systemSix-wheeled chassis, armoured cab, two launch containers and hydraulic guidance system.
However, experts suggest that real characteristics are significantly inferior to the original - First of all, in accuracy, guidance system and mobility.
A strategic signal
Analysts believe that the demonstration of this system should symbolic nature - Pyongyang wants to show that it is capable of developing equipment similar to Western models, despite sanctions and technological isolation.
A copy of HIMARS can also become an export product for North Korea's allies, including Russia, which is actively seeking alternative sources of arms supplies.
