On the temporarily occupied Crimean Peninsula, power cut schedules are being introduced, children’s sessions at summer camps are being cancelled, and additional restrictions on citizens’ movement are being imposed. These measures are in response to a series of Ukrainian strikes on military targets.

Briefly about the main points
  • Hourly power cut schedules have been introduced in Kerch.
  • Commuter train services in the central part of Crimea have been temporarily suspended.
  • Children’s trips to summer camps have been cancelled.
  • Motorcyclists are not allowed to ride after 10.00 pm.

Power cuts and transport problems

The occupying administration has announced the introduction of hourly power cuts in Kerch. It cannot be ruled out that similar measures may be extended to other towns on the peninsula. It has also emerged that electric train services in central Crimea have been suspended. Officially, the reason given is «technical problems», but local residents attribute the situation to security risks and their consequences recent attacks.

Camps and leisure activities under threat

Russian sources report that children’s trips to summer camps and health resorts have been cancelled. According to them, some coaches carrying children are already turning round en route and heading back home. Such decisions indicate growing concern among the occupying authorities regarding the security situation on the peninsula at the height of the tourist season.

New restrictions for motorcyclists

Another new feature was a ban on motorbikes travelling at night. In particular, motorcyclists have been banned from riding on the roads after 10.00 pm and during air raid alerts. Officially, these measures are justified on safety grounds, but they have become yet another means of tightening control in the occupied territory.

How does this relate to the Ukrainian strikes?

In recent months, the Ukrainian Defence Forces have been regularly carrying out strikes on the Russian army’s military airfields, ammunition depots, air defence systems and logistics hubs in Crimea. Targets in Sevastopol, Dzhankoy, Saki, Feodosia and other areas of the peninsula were hit. Ukrainian strikes are forcing the occupying administration to step up security measures and restrict the operation of certain infrastructure facilities.
