The American start-up JetZero has begun construction of a new passenger aircraft that could significantly transform civil aviation. The first demonstration flight is scheduled for the end of 2027.

The aircraft’s innovative design
An American aviation start-up JetZero has begun construction of a full-scale demonstration aircraft that could change the future of civil aviation. The project is being carried out in the Mojave Desert (California), and the first test flight is scheduled for the end of 2027.
The aircraft’s key feature will be its blended-wing-body design — an integrated configuration in which the fuselage flows seamlessly into the wings, forming a single lifting surface.
Fuel consumption: new possibilities
According to JetZero’s estimates, the new aerodynamic design will reduce aviation fuel consumption by approximately 50% compared with current aircraft of a similar class. The Z4 is designed to carry 200–270 passengers on medium- and long-haul routes. The aircraft is set to replace the segment previously occupied by the Boeing 757 and Boeing 767.
Other design advantages include a more spacious cabin with new seating configurations, larger windows, more spacious galleys and lavatories, and lower noise levels thanks to the engines being mounted in the upper rear section of the aircraft.
Support for the project
The development is not funded solely by private investors. In 2023, the US Air Force allocated $235 million towards the creation of a demonstration model. United Airlines Ventures, Alaska Airlines, Northrop Grumman and RTX Ventures have also joined the investors. United Airlines has already announced its intention to purchase up to 100 JetZero aircraft if the project successfully passes testing, and has also secured an option for a further 100 aircraft.
Testing and certification
Despite the high level of interest in the project, experts stress that JetZero has yet to prove the claimed efficiency of its design. Following its maiden flight, the company will need to undergo a multi-year certification process, secure billions of dollars in investment and roll out mass production. In addition to civil aviation, there are also plans to adapt the new platform for military transport aircraft and aerial refuelling tankers.
