Users in Russia are reporting widespread difficulties connecting to popular online games, including League of Legends and Marvel Rivals. According to them, the usual methods for restoring access — restarting the client or changing DNS servers — are not helping. For some players, a VPN remains the only way to access the games.
Briefly about the main points
- Users in the Russian Federation are complaining about connection problems with online games.
- Among the games mentioned are League of Legends and Marvel Rivals.
- Changing the DNS settings and restarting the clients reportedly do not help.
- These problems coincided with disruptions to access to Western websites in Russia.
- Riot Games’ status did not indicate any active incident in the Russian region.
The issue has affected several popular projects
The complaints relate to users located in the Russian Federation. They report that it is virtually impossible to access gaming services without a VPN. Among the titles to which access is restricted are League of Legends and Marvel Rivals.
The standard steps described by the players — changing DNS servers and restarting the game clients — did not resolve the issue. This distinguishes the situation from a local error on the device or a temporary problem with a specific application.
The disruptions are occurring against a backdrop of problems with overseas websites
On the morning of 14 July, Russian users also reported difficulties accessing the site without VPN to Google., GitHub, Apple and, in some cases, Samsung. The newspaper *Kommersant* confirmed that GitHub and Apple were down; at around 12.15 Moscow time, some of the services began to come back online.
Roskomnadzor has stated that it is not blocking these websites. At the same time, the fact that the issues with web resources and gaming platforms are occurring simultaneously may indicate not a general server outage affecting specific games, but rather a regional disruption or restrictions on network access within Russia.
Riot Games has not reported any server outages
At the time of the last indexing, Riot Games’ Russian status page did not list any active or recently closed incidents for League of Legends in the RU region. Consequently, the developer did not characterise the situation as a general outage of its gaming infrastructure for Russian users.
There are currently no official explanations as to why these particular issues are affecting League of Legends and Marvel Rivals from the developers, telecoms operators or Roskomnadzor.
Gaming services in the Russian Federation have already experienced similar disruptions
In early July, there were reports of connection issues with Roblox and PUBG in Russia, as well as complaints about Epic Games’ servers and the FACEIT platform. At the time, Roskomnadzor denied restricting access to Amazon CloudFront’s CDN.
In June 2025, Cloudflare reported that Russian internet service providers were restricting access for users in the Russian Federation to resources protected by the company. The company noted that such restrictions were being imposed at the level of local operators. Previous incidents do not prove the cause of the current outage, but they do show that problems with the network infrastructure have already affected Russians’ access to foreign online services.
