Brad Pitt has applied to the court to compel Angelina Jolie to hand over details of her income and tax returns for 2017–2019. The request was made as part of the former couple’s property dispute over the French winery Château Miraval. Jolie’s side objects, arguing that such documents constitute an excessive intrusion into her privacy.

Briefly about the main points

  • Pitt is asking for Jolie’s financial and tax records to be produced.
  • The enquiry relates to the period following the couple’s break-up.
  • Jolie submitted her accounts for only the following two years.
  • Her lawyers deny the allegations of financial difficulties.
  • The property dispute is due to be reheard in August 2027.

Pitt’s side links the revenue to the circumstances of the sale

Lawyers Pitta believe that the financial data Jolie are relevant to the assessment of her explanations regarding the sale of her stake in the winery. The actress had previously stated that she was seeking financial independence from her ex-husband and wished to divide their joint assets once and for all.

The actor’s representatives are requesting details of his earnings from film roles, advertising contracts, collaborations with brands and other professional projects. In their view, without this information, the jury may not be able to form a complete picture of the circumstances surrounding the deal.

In the application dated 31 July, Pitt’s lawyers also pointed out that Jolie had refused to limit the scope of evidence regarding her earnings during the forthcoming proceedings. According to the actor’s side, this provides grounds for requesting the financial statements in question.

Angelina Jolie calls the request excessive and cites privacy concerns

Jolie’s defence team is asking the court to dismiss the application. The actress’s lawyers argue that the reference to financial independence related to the separation of her financial affairs from Pitt’s, rather than a general lack of funds.

Angelina Jolie’s representatives emphasise that she has not claimed to be in financial difficulty. They believe that her opponents are selectively interpreting her previous statements in order to justify accessing her personal information.

The actress has already voluntarily submitted her income and tax details for 2020 and 2021. Her legal team maintains that a request for documents covering an earlier period would constitute a serious infringement of her right to privacy. The court has not yet issued a final ruling on this request.

The claim arose following the sale of a stake in the winery

Brad Pitt filed a lawsuit in February 2022, after Jolie sold her stake in Château Miraval to Tenute del Mondo. The actor claims that the former couple had an agreement not to dispose of their stakes without mutual consent.

Jolie denies that there is any mandatory restriction on such a sale. Her representatives attribute the deal to the fact that negotiations with Pitt regarding the buy-out of her share were unsuccessful.

The couple separated in 2016, and their divorce was finalised at the end of 2024. The property dispute over the winery remains unresolved; a new court hearing is expected in August 2027.
