In Massachusetts, 17-year-old Arjun Aravind has been charged with the murder of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his younger brother, Siddhartha Aravind. The prosecution stated that during the investigation, it discovered his internet searches and his use of ChatGPT to create fictional scenarios which, according to investigators, were linked to threats against his family. The teenager is being held without bail; a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf in court.

Briefly about the main points

  • The Massachusetts Public Prosecutor’s Office has charged 17-year-old Arjun Aravind with double murder.
  • Investigators are linking the case to the search for him and the gothic themes in ChatGPT.
  • The bodies of Sudhi Venkatesan and Siddhartha Aravind were found in the family home.
  • The police arrested a suspect in his mother’s car in Weiland.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office described the digital activity as part of the investigation

Middlesex District Prosecutor Marian Ryan reported that investigators had documented the use of the internet and ChatGPT to search for «theoretical ideas» or to create fictional stories about the murder of family members.

According to her, the discussions centred on Gothic fantasy plots: users would ask questions, create characters and explore possible plot developments. The prosecution believes that these stories may have been linked to threats against the family. This is the prosecution’s version of events, which has yet to be verified in court.

The police were called following a tutor’s visit to the house

The investigation began on Tuesday when a tutor arrived for a scheduled lesson but was unable to get in touch with the residents. The teenager’s father, who had last spoken to his wife before going to work, subsequently contacted the police.

The officers arrived at the house shortly after 6.30 pm. The body of 14-year-old Siddhartha was found on the ground floor, and that of 45-year-old Sudha in the cellar.

The official cause of death has not yet been established. Prosecutor Suzanne Weizman said that evidence found at the scene pointed to a physical and violent struggle and the use of blunt force against both victims.

Arrest in Weiland and the list of charges

By the time the bodies were discovered, the teenager and his mother’s green 2014 Honda Accord had disappeared from the house. Early the next morning, an alarm went off in a car park in Wayland, where the police focused their search.

At around 3.40 am, the police found Arjun Aravind in a car and arrested him. According to Weizman, items linked to the crime scene were found in the car.

The teenager is charged with two counts of murder, two counts of violence against a family member and two counts of assault, as well as using a car without permission and car theft. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
