On the night of 16 August, Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv. Fires broke out and damage was reported in the Obolon and Holosiivskyi districts. At the book market, the fire engulfed an area of around 2,000 square metres. Two people sought medical attention.
The Russian attack caused fires in two districts of Kyiv
An air raid alert was issued in the capital during the night due to the threat of ballistic weapons being used. Following the explosions, reports of damage began to come in from the Obolon and Holosiivskyi districts.
First, the mayor Vitali Klitschko reported one casualty. The State Emergency Service later clarified that two people had sought medical assistance at one of the sites. Details of their condition are currently being ascertained.
Rescue workers, medical staff, law enforcement officers and utility services are working at the sites where the strikes occurred and where debris has fallen.
Stalls were on fire at the book market
The largest fire broke out at one of the markets in the Obolon district. According to preliminary reports, it was a book market where the market stalls caught fire following a Russian strike.
The fire covered an area of approximately 2,000 square metres. Firefighters managed to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading further. It was at this location that two people required medical assistance.
The extent of the losses suffered by businesses and the quantity of goods destroyed have not yet been determined. A full assessment will be carried out once the emergency rescue operations have been completed and the area has been surveyed.
Non-residential buildings have been damaged in the Obolon district
In addition to the fire at the market, damage was reported at two further locations in the Obolon district. At one of these addresses, the blast wave caused minor damage to the building without any subsequent fire breaking out.
At another location, a non-residential building was hit. Cars also caught fire near one of the damaged premises.
There is currently no information regarding casualties at these locations.
A fire has been brought under control in the Holosiivskyi district
In the Holosiivskyi district, a fire broke out on the site of a non-residential development following an attack. Emergency services have brought the fire under control. According to preliminary reports, no one was injured.
Efforts to deal with the aftermath of the Russian attack are ongoing. Figures on the number of casualties, the extent of the damage and the property affected may be updated once the assessment of all locations has been completed.
