A Russian «Shahed»-type jet-powered UAV struck a private residential building in Chernihiv on the morning of 26 August. A 49-year-old woman and her 4-year-old granddaughter were killed; their bodies were found by rescue workers whilst clearing the rubble. The building was destroyed by fire. A day of mourning has been declared in the city.

Whilst clearing the rubble, State Emergency Service personnel discovered the bodies of the victims. The attack was the latest in a series of Russian strikes on the city: throughout August, damage to residential, energy and industrial and warehouse facilities was recorded in Chernihiv.
Flags will be flown at half-mast in the town on the Day of Mourning
Chernihiv City Council has declared 26 August a day of mourning for the victims of the attack. National flags are to be flown at half-mast on the buildings of government and local authority bodies, as well as on those of businesses and organisations.
