The installation «2,977 Lights Over New York Harbour» was billed as a free public art event in memory of the victims. The display began with a spiral of lights, after which the lights formed the architectural outlines of skyscrapers.
The project is a one-off event. It should not be confused with the annual a memorial Tribute in Light — two vertical beams of light over Lower Manhattan.
How New York is marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks
On 11 September 2001, Al-Qaeda militants hijacked four passenger aeroplanes and flew them into the towers in New York and the Pentagon. A total of 265 passengers and crew members were killed, along with 2,606 people at the World Trade Centre and 125 Pentagon employees. The attacks sparked a global war USA against terrorism and the invasion of Afghanistan.
The main ceremony at the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Lower Manhattan will include the reading of the names of the victims by their relatives. The programme includes seven moments of silence, including a new one in memory of those who died from 9/11-related illnesses.
