Deputy head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that the US has become Russia's enemy and threatened to strike Kyiv.

“The US is our enemy” - Medvedev

Medvedev reacted to the introduction of new US sanctions against Russia. In a post on social media, he called the US administration «our enemy» and President Donald Trump - «a talkative “peacemaker” who has taken the warpath».

«If anyone still had illusions, here you go. The United States is our enemy, and its talkative “peacemaker” has now fully embarked on the path of war with Russia... This is now his conflict,» Medvedev wrote.

He added that «there will be attacks on Ukraine with various weapons, without any thought of unnecessary negotiations».

Context.

Earlier, it was reported that the US was planning a new package of sanctions against Russia, in particular against Russian oil companies. Medvedev, in turn, uses such statements to shape the rhetoric of escalation and strengthen domestic mobilisation.

Statements of this nature have important symbolic significance: they indicate a deepening confrontation between Moscow and Washington.

Meaning.

  • Medvedev's statement is perceived as a signal of another escalation on the part of the Russian Federation.

  • It could affect the position of the United States and its allies in supporting Ukraine.

  • The Ukrainian leadership and international partners should take such public threats into account in their security and defence planning.
