The following have been installed in Kyiv 12 automatic turrets for countering «Shahed»-type jet-powered attack drones», and the number of such systems is set to increase. This was announced by Serhiy «Flash» Beskrestnov, adviser to the President of Ukraine on the development of defence technology. According to him, the Ukrainian design utilises machine-gun armament controlled by artificial intelligence. At the same time, he issued an important warning to residents of the capital: do not stand near windows during an air raid alert.

There are already 12 automated turrets in operation in Kyiv

Sergey Beskrestnov announced the deployment in the capital of a new measure to counter Russian jet drones. This refers to 12 automatic turrets, which have already been installed in Kyiv. The roll-out of the system will not stop there — there are plans to increase the number of installations.

«Flash» described the turrets as an innovative Ukrainian solution. According to him, the system destroys «Shaheds» using machine guns controlled by artificial intelligence. Detailed technical specifications, the locations of the installations and the algorithm governing their combat operations are not being disclosed for security reasons.

Why does Kyiv need new anti-drone systems?

Russia is increasingly using reactive modifications attack drones. They differ from conventional «Shaheds» in that they are significantly faster, which reduces the time available for air defence units to detect targets and respond. Beskrestnov had previously reported an increase in the number of such drones and a change in Russian tactics regarding the use of attack drones.

It is precisely these automated machine-gun mounts that could provide an additional layer of defence against low-flying aerial targets. This is not intended to replace traditional air defence systems, but rather to strengthen the system for countering drones.

Why are people in Kyiv being asked to stay away from windows?

Alongside the announcement about the new «Flash» turrets, he addressed the residents of Kyiv separately.

During the air-raid alert, he called on do not stand near the windows.

This warning is particularly important when air defence systems are in operation within the city. Debris from downed drones, fragments of munitions and other consequences of the interception of aerial targets may pose a danger. Therefore, during an air-raid alert, you should move to a safe place and follow the official civil defence guidelines.

The deployment of new turrets in Kyiv will continue. According to Beskrestnov, the 12 systems that have been installed are not the final number.
