In the Kyiv region, work has begun on installing modular shelters at passenger railway stations to protect people during Russian attacks. The first such structure has been set up at the station in Hlevas, and similar facilities are being installed in Vyshneve and Brovary. Each shelter is designed to accommodate 29 people at a time and is intended for passengers and railway staff. Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, announced the launch of the project on 9 October.

Briefly about the main points

  • Shelters are being installed at railway stations in the Kyiv region.
  • The first facility has already been set up in Hlevas.
  • Each shelter can accommodate 29 people.

A modular shelter with capacity for 29 people has been set up in Hlevas

The first facility under the new project was set up at the railway station in the village of Hlevakha, Kyiv Oblast. Timur Tkachenko He personally visited the installation site and familiarised himself with the design of the protective structure.

According to the regional administration, the shelter is certified and meets the relevant requirements. It can accommodate 29 people at any one time, including passengers waiting for a train and railway station staff.

The main feature of such structures is their modular design, which allows them to be erected in a relatively short time. Unlike permanent shelters, the construction of which requires considerably longer preparation, modular structures can be deployed more quickly on sites with the necessary infrastructure.

This solution is primarily intended for stations where there are not enough permanent protective structures, or where the existing shelters are located far from the passenger platforms.

Where else in the Kyiv region will shelters be installed?

Alongside the development of the site in Hlevas, work is also being carried out on the railway platforms in Vyshneve and Brovary. According to the head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration, these structures are due to be completed in the near future.

The project currently covers three settlements in the Kyiv region:

  • Hlevakha — the modular shelter has already been installed.

  • Vyshneve — installation work is ongoing.

  • Brovary — a protective structure is being prepared for use.

The regional authorities have not yet announced specific dates for the opening of the shelters in Vyshneve and Brovary. Nor has a full list been published of the other stations where similar structures are planned to be installed.

Why are shelters erected specifically near railway stations?

The expansion of the network of protective structures is linked to regular Russian attacks on Ukraine railway infrastructure. In the event of an air raid alert, passengers and station staff must be able to reach a safe place quickly without leaving the transport hub.

This issue is particularly relevant for small stations and passenger platforms that do not have their own permanent shelters. Modular structures offer a partial solution to the problem without the need for lengthy construction work.

There are plans to expand the network of protective structures

The Kyiv Regional Military Administration is working on the project in collaboration with Ukrzaliznytsia and local authorities. The main aim is to provide additional protection for passengers at stations where there is a lack of permanent protective structures.

According to Timur Tkachenko, there is a need to install such facilities at other railway stations in the region as well. Therefore, following the completion of the first phase, there are plans to expand the project further.
