On 8 October, Google unveiled Gemini Agent — an enterprise AI agent designed for multi-step tasks in email, documents, calendars and other connected systems. The company states that the agent can plan work and use tools; however, the announcement itself does not indicate any existing staff cuts.

Briefly about the main points

  • Google launched Gemini Agent on 8 October for corporate use.
  • According to Google, the agent carries out multi-step tasks within Google Workspace services.
  • A separate corporate identity is available to coworker agents, subject to the organisation’s settings.
  • The ILO considers the transformation of work to be more likely than the complete replacement of workers.

Agent for tasks between work services

Google Cloud named Gemini agent a versatile agent for work. Bloomberg also reported on the same day that Google had announced a working AI agent.

According to Google, the agent can receive tasks, plan a sequence of actions, use tools and connect to the company’s systems in order to deliver a finished result. This is not a standard chatbot designed for one-off replies, but a tool to which a multi-step process can be delegated.

What scenarios does Google describe?

The company reports that the agent works within Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar. The scenarios cited include coordinating meeting times via email, searching for and analysing information, building a financial model and preparing a presentation.

In coworker agent mode, an organisation can provide an agent with a separate corporate identity, an email address in the format @agents.company.com, and permanent storage. If required, an account can be created for them in Workspace with access to email, calendar and Drive; these features depend on the organisation’s settings.

Google also highlights the shared context and memory across devices and channels, as well as the ability to run tasks in the cloud over a period of hours or days. The agent’s access is restricted to the permissions granted, the data connected, and the materials shared with it by employees.

Task automation and its impact on employment

Google positions the Gemini agent as a tool for delegating certain coordination, analytical and administrative processes, including team-based tasks. However, the available data does not provide grounds for claiming that this product has already replaced specific professions or led to redundancies.

In a 2025 study, the International Labour Organisation estimated that generative AI It has the potential to affect roughly one in four jobs worldwide. The most likely outcome cited there is a transformation of work, rather than the complete replacement of workers: the practical impact of the Gemini agent will depend on the processes and access rights that companies delegate to it.
