Bridget Brink, the former US Ambassador to Ukraine, has stated that Donald Trump’s decisions play into Russia’s hands, undermine support for Kyiv and pose security risks to the United States and its allies. In a post on X, the diplomat called on the US administration to stand up to aggression, rather than putting pressure on Ukraine for the sake of agreements with Moscow.
Briefly about the main points
- Bridget Brink has criticised Donald Trump’s decision regarding Ukraine and Russia.
- The diplomat referred to the suspension of aid to Kyiv and the pressure being exerted on Zelenskyy.
- She also mentioned the lifting of sanctions, the collapse of the StarShield project and the diesel deal.
- Brink called on Washington to support its partners and counter aggression.
- Zelenskyy had previously warned against direct US support for Moscow.
Which decisions by the Trump administration did Brink mention?
Brink, who served as US Ambassador to Ukraine from 2022 to 2025, posted her assessment on the social media platform X. She recalled that a year and a half ago Trump stopped providing assistance to Ukraine in its defence and put pressure on the president Vladimir Zelensky, whilst seeking to reach an agreement with Russia.
The former ambassador also attributed the lifting of sanctions and the disruption to this policy StarShield and an agreement concerning diesel fuel. She described it as active support Vladimir Putin — that is Brink’s own assessment.
According to her, these moves are taking place at a time when Putin is trying to deprive electricity millions of Ukrainian men, women and children, as Ukraine heads into winter. The diplomat linked the easing of support for Kyiv to the benefits which, in her view, Moscow stands to gain.
A call to counter aggression and support our allies
Brink stated that concessions and appeasement of the dictator are not yielding results. She called on the Trump administration to stand up to aggression and to support the United States’ partners and allies.
In her view, an emboldened Putin is testing NATO’s defences and seeking to escalate the war. The former ambassador described support for Russian aggression as a serious mistake which, she said, is costing Ukrainians their lives, putting Washington’s allies at risk and undermining US national security.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously warned that direct support for Moscow from Washington would have catastrophic consequences.
