On 27 October, traffic conditions in Kyiv became more difficult due to restrictions on crossing the South Bridge over the Dnipro. Traffic jams are forming on the capital’s main roads, and drivers are having to take these changes into account when travelling between the two banks. The situation is further complicated by the aftermath of previous Russian attacks on transport infrastructure and repair work on the bridge.
- There are reports of heavy traffic congestion on the roads in Kyiv.
- From 27 October, additional traffic restrictions are in place on the South Bridge.
- On the flyover heading towards the left bank, traffic is being allowed through in a single lane.
- Maintenance work is scheduled to continue until 17:00 on 1 November.
Why have traffic jams formed in Kyiv?
Traffic between the right and left banks of the capital remains difficult due to the limited capacity of certain bridges.
The situation becomes particularly difficult in the morning, when a large number of cars are all heading to work and school at the same time. Restrictions on one of the key crossings over the Dnipro are putting increased pressure on alternative routes.
The South Bridge has previously been damaged on several occasions Russian strikes. In particular, following the attacks on 22 October, traffic was temporarily halted and subsequently resumed with restrictions.
What restrictions are in place on the South Bridge?
According to a statement issued by the Kyiv City State Administration on 26 October, repairs to the asphalt concrete surface on the Pivdennyi Bridge flyover are scheduled to take place from 07:00 on 27 October until 17:00 on 1 November.
The works will take place along Mykola Bazhan Avenue, when travelling from the right bank to the left bank of the Dnipro.
To carry out the repairs, roadworks crews are occupying the third and part of the second lanes. Traffic is being channelled through the first lane, which significantly reduces the capacity of this section.
However, the official announcement regarding the repairs did not specify that the bridge would be completely closed in both directions. For information on any further closures on 27 October, please check the latest updates from the police and the Kyiv City State Administration.
How drivers should plan their routes
Given the traffic restrictions on the South Bridge, the Darnytsia, North, Podil and Paton bridges remain alternative crossing points — subject to the restrictions currently in place on each of them.
Drivers are advised to check traffic conditions before setting off and to allow extra time for their journey. Delays may occur not only in the immediate vicinity of the crossings, but also on the approach roads and at junctions.
