Two missiles struck the Iranian island of Qeshm
Semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim reported two missile strikes on the island Kashm in the south of the country. The state news agency IRNA, citing local residents, reported that the explosions occurred near the city of Susa. Eyewitnesses said they had heard the sound of an aeroplane flying over the island before the strikes.
At the time of the initial reports, the Iranian authorities had not released any information regarding the extent of the damage or any possible casualties. Tasnim noted that further details would be made known once the relevant authorities had investigated the circumstances of the incident.
Qeshm Island is situated in Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the most important routes for international oil supplies. Since the start of the war between the US and Iran, this area has repeatedly been the scene of military incidents.
Trump confirmed the strike on Iran’s air defence system
President of the United States Donald Trump told journalists that the US military had carried out a limited operation against a recently established Iranian air defence system. According to him, the target was destroyed within a few minutes.
Trump described the attack as minor in scale. However, the US side did not provide detailed information about the weapons used, the exact location of the destroyed equipment or the results of the military operation.
Earlier this week, the US military had already reported strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington described as defensive. At that time, explosions were recorded on the islands of Qeshm and Khengam, as well as near the city of Bandar Abbas on the Iranian mainland.
Qatar is trying to resume talks between the US and Iran
The latest attack coincided with a resumption of diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran. Qatar, which is acting as the main mediator, has denied reports that talks on ending the war have allegedly broken down completely.
According to a statement from the Qatari International Media Office, both sides are continuing to work on possible agreements. The mediation is being carried out in close coordination with the US and Iran.
One of the main topics of the negotiations remains Iran’s nuclear programme. Washington is insisting on restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear activities, whilst Iran is demanding the lifting of sanctions, the unfreezing of assets, compensation for war damages and an end to the US naval blockade.
The mediators are also discussing the phased resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the possible return of international inspectors to Iranian nuclear sites. The parties have not yet reached a final agreement.
