US President Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller — one of his closest advisers and a key architect of the administration’s hardline immigration policy — as his new White House Chief of Staff. He will replace Suzie Wiles, who is stepping down following the Republicans’ defeat in the mid-term congressional elections. The appointment was announced on 6 November, and Miller will take up his new duties on Monday, 9 November.
- Trump has appointed Stephen Miller as the new White House Chief of Staff.
- Miller will replace Susie Wiles and take up her post on 9 November.
- The new official was one of the key architects of the administration’s immigration policy.
- The personnel changes took place after the Republicans lost control of Congress.
Stephen Miller is to head the White House staff
Trump announced the appointment on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating Miller’s one of the most trusted advisers. Prior to his promotion, he held the post of deputy chief of staff and was responsible for implementing a significant proportion of the administration’s domestic policy initiatives.
Miller has been working with Trump since the 2016 presidential campaign. During his first term, he served as a senior adviser to the president and was involved in drafting immigration restrictions. Following Trump’s return to the White House in 2025, Miller was given broader powers, particularly regarding the deportation of illegal migrants, the downsizing of the federal bureaucracy and the implementation of presidential decrees.
The role of White House Chief of Staff involves coordinating the work of the presidential administration, liaising with government departments and Congress, and overseeing the implementation of the President’s decisions. Miller’s appointment means that one of the chief architects of Trump’s policies will now also be responsible for the day-to-day running of the White House.
Susie Wiles is stepping down following the congressional elections
Former Chief of Staff Susie Wiles She announced her resignation on 5 November. She became the first woman in US history to head the White House staff and played a key role in Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
According to the US President, Wiles will continue to work as part of his political team. Trump thanked her for her work, without linking her resignation directly to the results of the vote.
The personnel reshuffle took place after the by-elections on 3 November, following which the Democratic Party gained control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Republicans’ loss of their majority in both chambers significantly complicates the implementation of the White House’s legislative initiatives and strengthens Congress’s ability to investigate the administration’s activities.
The new chief of staff advocates a tough immigration policy
Stephen Miller is known as one of the most consistent advocates of expanding presidential powers. He played a central role in a large-scale deportation campaign, and has called for tighter border controls and a reduction in the number of federal civil servants.
His political views are not limited to migration issues. Miller has also supported US military strikes against drug-trafficking targets and the use of force against Iran. This stance has repeatedly drawn criticism from Democrats and human rights organisations.
Representatives of the Democratic Party have already stated their intention to strengthen parliamentary scrutiny of the administration’s immigration policy. Meanwhile, Trump’s allies have welcomed Miller’s appointment, seeing it as confirmation of the President’s intention to continue on his chosen political course.
The new Chief of Staff will take up his post on 9 November, just as the White House is preparing to engage with Congress, control of which has passed to the Democrats following the election.
