The European Parliament may impose sanctions against Hungary

On 24 November, the European Parliament plans to consider Resolution on the crisis of the rule of law in Hungary.
The document defines what is happening in the country systemic violations of democratic principles and values of the EU.


Possible sanctions and legal pressure

The resolution states that the European Parliament may call on the EU Council to impose sanctions, а European Commission - to increase legal pressure on the prime minister's government Viktor Orban.
This could include freezing funding, restricting participation in European programmes and tightening control over the use of EU funds.


Hungary may be deprived of voting rights

According to Article 7 of the EU Treaty, In case of proven violations of the basic principles of democracy, the country may deprive of the right to vote in the Council of the EU.
This will be an unprecedented step that has never been taken in the history of the European Union.


Context.

The European Commission has already frozen more than 20 billion euros of funding for Hungary, accusing the Orbán government of violating the independence of the judiciary, suppressing media freedom and persecuting NGOs.
