Russia and Kazakhstan sign declaration on “comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance”

Russia and Kazakhstan have signed Joint declaration on a comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance, The Kremlin said.
The document sets out deepening political, economic and security cooperation between the two countries, The Russian Federation is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).


Content of the agreement

According to official information, the declaration provides for:

  • Expanding military-technical cooperation,

  • Joint actions in the field of energy and oil and gas transit,

  • Coordination of positions in international organisations,

  • as well as “deepening humanitarian and cultural ties”.

The signing took place during the visit of the Kazakh delegation to Moscow.
President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin called Kazakhstan “a key ally in Central Asia,” and his Kazakh counterpart Kassim-Zhomart Tokayev stressed the “mutual interest in stability and joint development”.


Context.

Analysts note that Moscow is trying to increase its influence in Central Asia, The region has seen an increase in the economic presence of China and Turkey in recent years.

Despite the formal partnership, Kazakhstan did not support Russia's war against Ukraine, by refraining from direct arms supplies to Moscow and not recognising the occupied territories.
The signed declaration, according to experts, may be Kremlin's attempt to restore trust after the cooling of relations, caused by the war.
