Orban: Hungary will not comply with EU migration pact
Prime Minister Viktor Orban said. Hungary will not comply with the provisions of the new EU migration pact, which is due to enter into force in 2026. He said this in an interview with local media, commenting on Brussels' migration policy.
«We will not accept migrants and we will not spend money on it. Hungarians will decide for themselves who to let into their country,» Orban said.
Context.
New EU migration pact provides for the distribution of responsibilities between member states: countries either accept migrants or pay financial contributions to a special fund.
The Orbán government has repeatedly criticised Brussels for «coercive migration policy» and refused to participate in refugee redistribution programmes.
In May, the European Parliament adopted the final version of the pact regulating border procedures, the return of illegal migrants and financial solidarity of the EU countries.
EU response
The European Commission has previously warned that Ignoring joint decisions can lead to legal consequences for Member States, including financial sanctions.
Despite this, Budapest claims that «national sovereignty» and control over its borders will remain a priority.
