US pressures Ukraine and Europe on Trump's plan: embassy meeting turns into scandal
The United States has sharply increased pressure on Ukraine and its European partners to adopt the so-called of Trump's peace plan, which, according to US negotiators, is «almost non-negotiable». This was reported by Financial Times, describing a meeting at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington the day before.
According to one European diplomat, the atmosphere of the talks had a «nauseating tone» and the discussion «quickly got out of hand». The US side insisted that it was only «a matter of time» before an agreement was reached, hinting at the inevitability of the Ukrainian side accepting Washington's terms.
«It's time to end this shit»: Driscoll's tough statements
Secretary of the US Army Henry Driscoll called the war «shit that needs to end» and said that Ukraine is in a «very bad situation», and therefore now is «the best time for peace».
He insisted that the president Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to sign the agreement until Thursday, The government has been working on this issue for some time now, stressing that delaying it could make the situation worse.
The EU ambassadors present at the meeting also claimed that the US representatives consider Trump's plan to be the final version, open only to minimal amendments.
Europeans are shocked: «This is a strategic victory for Russia»
EU diplomats strongly disagreed with Washington's position. They called the proposed plan «Russia's strategic victory», which will receive key concessions without guarantees of long-term peace.
The Europeans expressed dissatisfaction with the tone of the US side, which refused to acknowledge that such conditions could undermine Western unity and jeopardise Ukraine's position.
The US responded to the criticism of its European partners by saying that Trump's plan «the best that Ukraine can expect in its situation».
What does this shift in diplomacy mean?
Analysts say that Washington's strong pressure indicates a change in the approach to the war:
The White House is committed to a prompt cessation of hostilities;
The US expects Kyiv to be ready to compromise;
The EU is trying to hold back the process, pointing out the risks to European security;
Ukraine will have to manoeuvre between the ultimatum demands of the Americans and the unwillingness of the Europeans to maintain conditions favourable to Russia.
The situation is described by the FT as one of the toughest diplomatic episodes between the Allies from the beginning of the war.
