On the night of 1 August, Russian troops launched a massive missile attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The enemy used ballistic missiles, and a series of powerful explosions rocked the capital. According to preliminary reports from the mayor, Vitali Klitschko, three people were killed in Kyiv. A further five residents of the capital were injured. All those injured were hospitalised. In one of the damaged high-rise residential blocks, the first and second floors were partially destroyed. According to preliminary reports, two people were killed at this location and a further four were injured. Among the injured was a 17-year-old boy.

The aftermath of the attack in areas of Kyiv
A fire broke out in a six-storey non-residential building in the Solomyanskiy district. Cars in the car park were also on fire. People were trapped in a five-storey residential building after rocket debris fell on it, according to reports KMVA and Vitali Klitschko.
A fire at a car wash and damage to residential buildings have been reported in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
In the Darnytskyi district, a strike occurred on the site of a non-residential development. Storage facilities caught fire. Local media outlets are also reporting that the «Velmart» supermarket in Bereznyaky has been hit, although official sources had not confirmed the name of the damaged building at the time of publication.
Rescue workers, medical staff, police officers and utility services are working at all the sites. Fire-fighting operations and inspections of damaged buildings are ongoing.
Fires also broke out in the Kyiv region
As a result of the Russian strike in the Bucha district, fires have broken out in warehouses and residential buildings. All the necessary emergency services are on the ground, according to the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.
The Ukrainian Air Force has repeatedly warned about ballistic missiles, which were heading for the capital from the north.
Monitoring sources preliminarily estimate the number of missiles fired to be at least 25. Possible types mentioned include the S-400, Iskander-M, North Korean KN-23 and Zircon missiles. At the time of publication, there had not yet been an official report from the Air Force regarding the final number and types of missiles.
